With all of the snow we are seeing, we decided to learn and discuss what animals do during the Winter. We started by reading the book, Animals in Winter, and learned how animals in Ohio either migrate, hibernate, or survive/brave the cold. After our story and discussion, we did an experiment to simulate the fat an animal stores in its body to keep warm during the Winter. Each child had a turn to have cooking fat covered on one of his/her fingers and then placed it in a bowl of snow, while placing a bare finger on the other hand in another bowl of snow. Children discovered that the finger covered in cooking fat stayed warmer than the bare finger.
