WEEK OF 9/24-9/28

MONDAY~DRAMA
~Ask your child about his/her "magic box"!

TUESDAY~TECHNOLOGY
~Children were introduced to KidPix in the computer lab.

WEDNESDAY~ART
~After hearing a story about the building of The Empire State Building ( a "tall tower") children were able to build their own "towers" using marshmallows and toothpicks.

THURSDAY~COOKING
To begin our cooking activity, children heard the story, The Little Red House.  Be sure to ask your child where the little boy in the story found the little red house with no doors, no windows, and a star inside.  (A copy of this story came home in your child's folder.)  Next, children chopped up apples for our Apple Dump Cake.  The apples went into the baking pan first.  Next, children helped "dump" in a yellow cake mix.  Finally, melted butter was "dumped" into the cake pan.  After baking, children sampled the Apple Dump Cake for snack.  YUMMY!!!!!

 FRIDAY~SWIMMING
The children continue to practice appropriate ways of getting in and out of the pool using the ladder or from the wall onto the deck.  Mr. Yakscoe demonstrated 2 ways to lift your head/face from the water when you need a breath.  Using a kickboard, barbell flotation device, or a noodle, children "swam" the width of the pool in the shallow end two times.  We also made a "train" and traveled by creeping along the wall from the shallow end to the deep end.  After all this hard work, children enjoyed some free time in the water in the shallow end!

~We "creeped" along the pool wall and went to the deep end of the pool.  Mr. Yakscoe demonstrated how to be a "submarine" in the water.
~Children were given some "free time" in the water in the shallow end.  There were "noodles", kick boards, and flotation "barbells" to use for support if wanted/needed.
Overall, the children are doing VERY well with their comfort level and confidence in the water!

FRIDAY~DISCOVERY--Today's Discovery activity involved learning more about trees--particularly about the bark of trees.  Be sure to ask your child what the bark does for a tree.  After reading a story about trees and looking at some photos of different bark on the SmartBoard, we headed outside to do some bark rubbings.  Mrs. Terwin showed us 2 Oak trees--one young and one old.  The bark of the young Oak tree was smooth, while the bark on the old Oak tree was rough.
